Brandon Vaidyanathan

Dr. Vaidyanathan is Associate Professor of Sociology. He was born and raised in the Arabian Gulf. His educational background includes a BBA from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, an M.Sc. in Management from HEC Montreal, a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame, a specialization in Design Thinking from the Darden Business School, and training in Nonprofit Performance Measurement from the Harvard Business School and Kennedy School. His research examines the cultural dimensions of religious, commercial, medical, and scientific institutions, and has been published in journals such as Social Problems, Social Forces, Sociology of Religion, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Journal for the Theory of Social Behavior, and Journal of the American Academy of Religion.

His first book (under contract at Cornell University Press), titled Mercenaries and Missionaries: Global Capitalism and Global Religion in Emerging Economies, examines the role of religion in the lives of corporate professionals in India and the Arabian Gulf. He has also co-authored a book (under review) on the role of religion in the lives of scientists in eight countries.
His current and ongoing research examines the aesthetic dimensions of science; mental health issues in religious communities; and the relationship between religion and social innovation.
